Fenben Powder For Small Animals

Fenben is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic, or anti-worm medication, that has been in wide use for about six decades. It’s often used in animals (common brand names include Pancur and Safe-Guard) to treat worms and parasites, but it recently caught the attention of researchers investigating its possible cancer-fighting properties.

Interestingly enough, it has been found that fenbendazole disrupts microtubules, which are structures involved in cell division and growth. It is believed that this disruption may help to prevent the cancer cells from dividing and growing, and it has been suggested that this may be why fenbendazole shows promise as an anticancer medication.

The problem, however, is that fenbendazole cannot be easily administered to small animals. It comes only in powder form and liquid suspension, which is impractical to dispense by mouth to a cat or kitten, and the syringe paste formulation intended for horses requires a prescription and comes in a very large bottle size that makes it impractical for use in small animals as well.

The answer to this issue is compounding pharmacies, which are licensed by the state and trained to create medications for pets whose needs can’t be met with FDA-approved drugs. They can be especially useful for those pets who have trouble swallowing pills in capsule form, for whom a certain dosage strength isn’t commercially available, or for whom there are allergies to ingredients in an FDA-approved medication. For example, veterinarians sometimes prescribe fenbendazole in the form of a compounded oral gel for cats and kittens. fenben powder
