The success of hillhaven’s nursing homes sparked interest from outside health care corporations, and Hillhaven accepted an offer in April 1995 to be bought out by Louisville, Kentucky-based Vencor, operator of 35 long-term-care hospitals with $400 million in revenue. The deal was seen as a complementary marriage that would result in a prodigious, integrated health care force.
In the four years that followed, Hillhaven streamlined its operations and established operating and financial criteria for all its facilities. It also eliminated 77 nursing centers, 87 pharmacies, and 24 retirement housing centers that did not meet these standards. Its efforts paid off, and in the late 1990s hillhaven recorded better-than-average Medicare scores in eight of nine quality measures and saw a reduction in its rate of hospitalizations and ER visits by former residents. hillhaven
