Merit Beauty Review

If you’re a beauty junkie, chances are you’ve heard of the new clean makeup brand Merit Beauty. It launched stateside in January 2021, and has already been a hit with celebs (Mandy Moore and Bella Hadid are fans) and beauty editors. The minimalist-makeup brand is fully age inclusive and focuses on healthy, easy-to-use formulas that provide a natural look without the fuss.

Founded by Katherine Power, the woman behind affordable skin-care brand Versed (a Who What Wear favorite) and author of Avaline Wine, Merit Beauty was developed with a five minute makeup routine in mind. With the help of Hollywood facialist Biba de Sousa, she set out to create a line of products that are truly “clean” (no talc, no parabens, no fragrance) and high-performing. The entire line is thoughtfully curated, edited and packaged in a simple stick-form that makes them easy to use on-the-go and from your vanity.

While the line isn’t perfect—it lacks a full eyeshadow collection and an eyebrow product—the rest of the line is really something special. The complexion sticks offer a light-to-medium coverage and are incredibly blendable, the blush and bronzer balms have great color payoff and shade inclusivity, and the lip oils are super hydrating with ingredients like shea butter and omega fatty acids.

As for the “clean” part, the brand meets both EU and Clean at Sephora standards and also excludes any ingredient on TNK’s No Thanks list. However, there are a few questionable ingredients in the line, including Ceresin (another form of paraffin wax derived from ozokerite), which has tested positive for levels of the carcinogen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
