Why My Dryer Is Not Spinning

Dryers and washing machines get a lot of use in our homes and, like all household appliances, they are susceptible to breakdowns and malfunctions. This article will walk through the most common reasons a dryer is not spinning and steps to help you troubleshoot the issue on your own or with the help of a professional.

First, a quick check for power. Check the cord and circuit breaker to make sure they are working properly. Sometimes, a simple reboot or reset is all that is needed to return power to the appliance.

Another common reason a dryer won’t spin is because the rubber drive belt that loops around the drum is worn or cracked. This is easy to check by removing the belt and trying to turn the drum by hand. If the drum doesn’t move easily you will need to replace the belt.

Idler pulley failure can also cause your dryer to not spin. The idler pulley helps maintain tension on the belt, which in turn allows the motor to spin the drum. If the idler pulley is worn or broken it will need to be replaced in order for the dryer to operate correctly.

Finally, if you have tried all of the other solutions and still your dryer is not spinning, it may be because the door switch has failed. When you close the door, a plastic peg should click and signal the switch to start the dryer. If this peg is bent or broken it will need to be straightened or replaced. dryer is not spinning
