The Benefits of Reserve Residences
Reserve residences are a great way to live near your university. You’ll be close to campus and have access to all the resources that your campus offers. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet people from around the country who share your interest in a variety of topics.
A reserve is a property owned by the Crown that is set aside for use by First Nations residents. The lands are typically located in remote areas with limited economic opportunities, and they are often subject to environmental regulations. These limitations make it difficult to develop the land and access natural resources, such as fish and timber.
The Canadian government has recognized the enduring challenges that reserve communities face, and in an effort to address these issues, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) provides a wide range of programs to assist Aboriginal people living on reserves. The goal is to support the health, welfare and education of Aboriginal people and their families by providing income assistance, employment opportunities, and social services.
Housing is a key issue for many First Nations people living on reserves. In fact, a significant number of Aboriginal families are homeless. In addition, there are a number of reasons why these families are homeless.
Discriminatory legislation, including the Indian Act, and federal programs like the residential schools and the “Sixties Scoop,” have all contributed to the situation that so many First Nations people find themselves in today. This has left the First Nations people living on reserves with very little control over their own lives.
Despite these hardships, reserve communities are home to many of Canada’s Indigenous languages and traditions, as well as cultural practices. These traditions and cultures provide a strong sense of identity for the First Nations, and they are important to their survival.
Some First Nations people prefer to stay on the reserve where their family has lived for generations. Others choose to leave the reserve and find a better quality of life off-reserve.
While the debate over how to improve the condition of Aboriginal communities continues, it is clear that many leaders and activists believe there are ways for Aboriginal people to overcome the challenges of living on a reserve. They argue that by preserving their traditional lifestyles and cultural practices, Aboriginal people can thrive in their own lands while still retaining the benefits of the reserve system.
There are a number of other ways to ensure that all residents of a reserve community have access to essential services and opportunities. For example, Indigenous Services Canada and the government of British Columbia have developed a program called Income Assistance for Native Families, which aims to ensure that all First Nations people living on reserves have access to the income they need to support themselves.
The government also provides financial assistance to First Nations people living on reserves who need to build or renovate a house. This is accomplished through a series of programs such as the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s on-reserve housing loan program. These programs are designed to help members of bands secure affordable, long-term loans that will allow them to purchase a house or apartment on their reserve.
